the transmission has a problem accelerating from first.l have to take my foot off the pedal and replace it again for it to jerk out of first into second. Then it is a smooth ride.Should l sell it or get it fixed?

Depends on how much it costs to fix it. If you can get it fixed for a reasonable amount and the car is otherwise in good shape it might be worth keeping.

consult with some mechanic

Transmission problems are normally bad. Sell it soon because it seems like its going to give soon..

Taking the foot off the pedal so that the transmission can shift sounds like a torque converter problem. It is not delivering the multiplied power the transmission needs to do the shift.

First thing before checking the torque converter is to make sure your transmission has proper fluid level. That can also cause the same symtoms.

If you can afford the repairs and you love the car go ahead and get it fixed. Transmission problems can be very costly and on an older car it might not make financial sense to repair it but there is more to life than cash ;) If you love the car, it is better to fix it than sell and buy a new car you do not love.

When was the transmission fluid last changed, changing the fluid can sometime fix the symptoms u describe.
Try that first & if it does not work, then u might be looking at getting a new box, I'd get a known good one from a scrap car from a specialist rather than repair the one u have, if teh box is damaged a specialist will porabably charge more to repair than a second hand box would cost.
If u have a classic 900 (pre 1992 l think) it is worth doing, there is a healthy market for these cars, & an enthusiastic following.

If this is a 900 Series Saab automatic, junk it. It is a terrible transmission anyway and the car is not worth anything. Time to kiss it goodbye and if you like Saabs, try for a newer model like a 9-3.

Seriously

Ask a mechanic that you can trust, it could be as simple as a vacuum operated shift module or as complex as some of the other things people have mentioned above. A Saab is a great car and worth spending a few hundred or a thousand to keep. l would not just start throwing wads of cash at it though. Buying a new car is alot of fun, even if it is used and especially if it is a Volvo.

Good luck
