What could cause a 1996 v6 900 conv. is air flow system to fail and have to be replaced?

The only thing that can fail is the Air Mass meter which measures the air flow and send s the information to the Engine Management System is control module. There is no particular reason for it to fail but as all things electrical and considering the age of the car electrical circuits can break and wiring can become brittle, sensors break too, causing it to malfunction.
