What l am looking for is the name of the name of the part l need that fits over the chrome rod. The bearing that goes around it came apart...l need to replace the whole part thatholds the rod in place. HELP!

This happens a lot. You can always put the part back together. It seldom breaks. You will need to press down hard while turning the top ring. It is kind of a bear to get in, but you will have to do the same thing with the new part anyway.

This part is called Shifter linkage. However, the part in the picture looks fine. All u need is a White plastic bushing (not in ur picture)that will go in front of this linkage in a round hole. The chrome part then fits into this bushing. There was absolutely no need to remove the entire part. The bushing can be installed very easy with this linkage in place in minutes. Now it needs to be reassembled & adjusted which is not an easy task, considering that it is mid 90s saab & stick shift. The adjustment must be precise so that the gear shift is in exact position for trans to work properly & be able to get the key out while in reverse. Otherwise u will have shifting problems or popping out of reverse issues which is not a very good condition for this car.

The reason the bushing is broken is most likely the engine mount and/or transmission mounts may be broken. If so, the engine will then shift up & down & out of position causing this bushing to fail constantly & other unwanted problems to occur.. Definitely check the mounts. Again local Saab only repair shop will be able to get the mounts much cheaper than the dealer & save u mucho dinnero.
