l have a 1991 Saab 900 l keep in storage most of the time. l love it and it is in quite good condition. However, l need a new motor as it is running on 3 cylinders only. Is it worth fixing and what would it cost (Canada)?

Unfortunately l can only rarely drive it so it sits in storage. l had it tuned up before l drove it last time, however the radiator always seems to run high, so l have to turn the heater on to cool it at times when l do drive it. My mechanic did a compression check and said it was running on 3 cylinders. l do not recall him mentioning head gasket. Does this mean l do not need a new motor?

how do you know you are running on only 3 cylinders?
have you done a compression check? what else have you done?
it could be anything from bad spark plugs, leaking compression (which will cause bad oil consumption),etc
anyways, for the price of a new motor you could easily rebuild it for less and have a lot more fun :D

they say that you should only trade your car off if it will cost more than half of the book value of the car.. hope this helps

A 91 SAAB 900. l will fix it for all it takes. Man you are talking antiques here. Such cars are not made anymore. However, a piece of advice, use the car atleast once a week to keep all things working and lubricated. Change engine oil every 3 months, rotate tires too.

It is worth fixing, you bet. You can not possibly be running on 3 cylinders, though. The Direct Ignition Cassette would fail completely if one coil fried. Instead, check things such as air filters and sensors.

well l used to own a Saab but mine was a 1976 99 gle l had that car for 4 years and it ran like a new car it had 350,000 on it it was the most reliable car l ever had l only sold it because l cant drive anymore. anyway Saab makes a very reliable car take it to a mechanic and have it fixed yes it is worth fixing .

If ur tune up is fine & not the reason it is running on 3 cylinders, then the most likely issue is the headgasket.

Was the car over heated, causing a blown headgasket?

If it was not over heated then they sometimes blow out at the #1 cylinder towards the timing chain area, usually causing oil leaks due to to much crankcase pressure.

A headgasket job will run around 8 hours in labor & about $100-200 in parts & fluids.

l would fix it, if its in good condition.
