ORIGINAL QUESTION:
The factory installed radio/tape player is a lot different as far as hook ups go. I've also been told there are ''certain compatible stereos'' you have to buy when you own a Saab. If this is the case...what one should l buy instead or is there some sort of hookup/adapter l can purchase instead and still use the one l currently have?

It is a 1996 9000CS and has the original radio/tape player currently installed.

What is the name of the adaptor l can buy to make it ''plug and play?''

its called a ''wire harness adaptor'' ,,,it plugs into the cars factory harness & produces green/purple/grey/white speaker wires--red/yellow/black power wires--blue/white power antenna & solid blue for remote(amplifier)--orange (rarely used) dimmer & these wires go to the back of all aftermarket radio is ie; sony pioneer alpine clarion etc. check-it U can go to curcuit city & get what they call a smart wire connection ----it is the wire harness adaptor to another harness to the specific radio U will be using so its just 2-3 connections & go,,,plus securing the radio to the car, check their web-site to see if they have it for the 96 9000,,,i have a 92 9000 hatch & l had to re-wire the whole audio system,,,-------------------------------------------------------------------------hey bill p there r wire harnesses for ALL volvo is even late model 780's,,,

any adapter -most are universal.

There may or may not be a p n p adapter. l own Volvos & what I've always done is go to a reputable repair shop & have them print out the wiring diagram, listing the color of the wires in the original stereo & what they go to. l then take the car & new radio to Circuit City & have them install it. Compatible? The only way it would be incompatible is if it were a different voltage. Some cars take a ''one din'' unit while others take a double DIN. Din is a standard size radio opening whereas the double is two, one stacked on top of the other. Most aftermarket radios r single DIN so u may need an adapter plate to cover up the hole underneath. Sometimes there is a small cubby hole kind of thing u can install. Try ebay as they have some pretty off the wall stuff!!
